Maui Parrotbill (Psuedonestor xanthophrys)

If the Maui parrotbill had a Hawaiian name in the past it was not recorded but recently the name kiwikiu was given to it. Fewer than 600 are thought to survive in a small region of rainforest on the slopes of Haleakala. Its beak is huge compared to other members of the honeycreeper family and is used for opening up small branches to find insects. For my photos of this species in the wild go here.
