'iliahi  (Santalum haleakalae var. haleakalae)

'iliahi or Haleakala Sandalwood can still be fairly easily seen inside Haleakala National Park on Maui despite it being an endangered species. Hawaiian sandalwood species of which there is six, were severely over harvested in the early 1800's when a trade began with King kamehameha the first and European ship captains selling the heart wood in China. For more info on the sandalwood trade go here. For my photos of this species in the wild go here.
